Induction Pictures

We have pictures from the November 15, 2002 induction ceremony for the new members. Here’s the web links below:

Office Hours

Office hours have been posted for all participating members.

Donate a Phone

Our chapter is asking cell phone users to answer the call and turn in their used cell phones to help keep our environment clean and to raise funds for Normandale’s major gift campaign. Any portable cellular or PCS phone is accepted, excluding bag phones or vehicle-installed models. We will also take the phone’s battery or charger, if available. All donors should deactivate the wireless service of any donated phones before turning them in. Donated phones that cannot be refurbished are properly recycled to benefit the environment.

  • Begins: Monday, September 30, 2002.
  • Ends: May 2003.
  • Drop off zones: various containers are scattered around the college, but they can also be dropped off at the Phi Theta Kappa office, CC1425.
Study Buddies

Our chapter is hosting study buddy sessions on various topics. Everyone who needs help or just wants to study for calculus is welcome to join. One advantage I (the webmaster) have found is that even though you might not need help all the time, it’s nice to have others around just in case you have a question. Note sheets will also be provided (available only for calculus and physics) for those who want to have a quick review of the main ideas and theorems. The topics, times and locations are listed below:

  • Calculus: Tuesdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in C1107.
  • Physics: Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in C1107.
  • Spanish: Fridays from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in C1107.
We also have a calculus notes section on our website. It is not yet complete, but all are welcome to visit it.
Cancer

The international service project at Phi Theta Kappa is fighting cancer. In the battle, knowledge is power. Below are some websites hand picked by our webmaster for those who desire more info not just about cancer itself and tips on prevention, but even a cancer risk calculator and an easy way to help out.

Latest News Articles

Every so often this chapter mails out a newsletter about the activities we’ve done and upcoming events. The latest news articles were on the April 2002 newsletter, issue 1 of volume 17. The news articles have been ported onto our chapter’s website via our webmaster (Wade A. Tisthammer) and have been divided into three parts.

  1. Part 1
  2. Part 2
  3. Part 3

Updates
  • January 31, 2003—The calendar of events has been updated for this month.

  • December 5, 2002—Our chapter’s phone number is now at the bottom of every web page. The calendar of events has been updated somewhat.

  • October 28, 2002Office hours have been posted.

  • October 10, 2002—The “What is Phi Theta Kappa?” box was moved to the top (previously it was below all the announcements). Information on our Donate a Phone project has been added to announcements section of our homepage.

  • October 7, 2002—The calendar of events has been updated, as has the information on this years study buddy sessions.

  • September 4, 2002—The homepage was updated slightly. For calc study buddies, we have put up a partially completed calculus notes section in our website.

  • April 29, 2002—The calendar of events was slightly updated, and the mini-honors (April 26-27, 2002) section was removed from the homepage.

  • April 20, 2002—The April 2002 newsletter articles have been ported onto our chapter’s website via our webmaster (Wade A. Tisthammer) and have been divided into three parts.

    1. Part 1
    2. Part 2
    3. Part 3

  • April 1, 2002—Additional links were made on the homepage for the mini-honors convention.

  • March 21, 2002—Dave had the online registration form set up and was linked to our website.

  • March 19, 2002—Dave created a nice flash animation for our website, and Wade added it to the top of every web page that has the sort of template as the homepage.

  • March 4, 2002—The format of the updates was changed. The most recent updates are at the top, instead of at the bottom. (Thanks to Dave for this suggestion.) The “What is Phi Theta Kappa?” section has been slightly improved as well. The upcoming events about caucuses were put on the Alpha Kappa Alpha homepage. Below are the web pages that were added:

    • Poster—A web version of the poster that was set up at our college thanks to Willie. It is a quick and excellent brief overview of what happens in general elections, in addition to providing contact info if you wish to participate in your favorite party’s precinct caucus.
    • The Road to Election—The Road to election begins with caucuses. But what the heck are caucuses? What do they do? And how can I contact my favorite party to get involved in this sort of stuff? Check out this web page and you just may find the answers to these questions.

  • February 25, 2002—The calendar of events has been updated all the way through April. Because it’s late February, the earlier items on the calendar were deleted.

  • January 17, 2002—Further experimentation was done to find out why this page does not open in Netscape. The creator and designer of our chapter’s website (Wade A. Tisthammer) took out some html code of the homepage and see if it worked in Netscape. It did. Wade then restored the portions he originally took out step by step to see what went wrong (i.e. what code made the Netscape browser unable to display the page). After each step though, the page continued to work in Netscape. Now the entire homepage works in Netscape. Why on Earth this happened is not known.

  • December 18, 2001—Credit for the designer and the date when the page was last modefied are now both added to our web pages.

  • December 14, 2001—A counter was added at the bottom of the homepage (the web page you are at right now).

  • December 10, 2001—We have an e-mail address and it's now located at the bottom of every web page that we have.

  • December 9, 2001—A “status strip” was added near the top of the homepage. Alas, the marquee scrolling effect is yet another thing that does not work in Netscape.

  • December 7, 2001—Want to learn more about the essay contest for that Dogma movie? The prize for the winner was $50! Click here to learn more about the essay contest. Alas, the essay contest is over. This update is now just for historical purposes.

  • December 3, 2001—We're currently testing out AVI files that can be played with QuickTime (sorry, doesn't work on Windows Media Player). You can check one of them out here.

  • November 30, 2001—We have a calender of events for the month of December.

  • November 26, 2001—We got pictures (thanks to Willie)!

  • November 17, 2001—The message board is operational. Feel free to post any messages (questions, comments, or whatever).

  • November 15, 2001—The chat room is operational, though the message board may be changed.

  • November 14, 2001—Wade A. Tisthammer used tripod as a temporary (and now permanent) host for our chapter’s website, and transferred the template he created here. One of the cool features is that the links change color once you put your mouse over it (but it doesn't work in Netscape). At this time it was not yet known what the permanent host would be. We recognized some advantages and disadvantages in remaining being hosted by this company. Some advantages to keeping this host are:

    • Free web hosting.
    • Easy to use.
    • Address is free and easy to remember.
    Some disadvantages are:
    • The requirement of advertisements.
