On The Road to Election

By Nicole Walberg

On Monday, March 4, Alpha Kappa Alpha went all out to promote the vote. A table was set up near the College Center to advertise for the precinct caucuses that would be held the following evening. Pamphlets and flyers were available in abundance pertaining to the parties’ platforms, and a few of the honor society’s members were set up to help find the location of precinct caucuses locally. In addition to the table, a seminar was held in the auditorium with representatives from the various parties. The honor society even managed to recruit special guests, Abe Lincoln (played by Kirk Difrancesco) and George Washington (Willie Laveen), to inspire and attract students. Over all, the day was successful in involving students and staff in the election process, one of Phi Theta Kappa’s main focuses this year.

Mini-Honors Convention

By Carrie Riewe

On April 26 and 27, our chapter will host the Regional Mini-Honors conference at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre in Chanhassen, Minnesota. At this conference, we will kick off our new Honors Study Topic “Dimensions and Directions: Choices in the Maze.” Phi Theta Kappans from our region of Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, and Minnesota will come together to take part in hands-on activities and seminars. As Honors Study Topic chair in our region, we are responsible for hosting the conference.

Friday, April 26, will begin with the Health and Wellness Mini-Fair. We have invited presenters to cover topics such as Massage Therapy, Nutrition, Aromatherapy, Chiropractic, and Salon & Spa Treatment. Saturday, April 27, NCC instructor Dr. Russell Smiley will deliver his views on holistic health in the keynote address. Following his presentation, attendees will split into small groups for breakout sessions. A student instructor of Dr. Smiley will lead each breakout group in Qigong exercises. Breakout groups will also discuss topics covered in the conference. The convention will end with lunch and a performance of The Music Man.
